Personally Speaking – Daniel Flynn, Chief Executive, YMCA North Staffordshire

When more than 2,800 young people from Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire took part in the recent youth consultation, they gave us something remarkable: a roadmap for a better future, not only for themselves but for all of us.

Their voices are clear, hopeful, and full of heart. What they’re asking for isn’t extravagant or impossible. They’re asking for connection, respect, fairness, and opportunity, the same foundations every strong community is built on. Reading their words reminded me why I love this city and why I believe in its people.

Young people told us they want mental-health support that is easy to find and free of stigma, affordable and safe homes, and youth spaces that feel welcoming and inclusive. They want education that prepares them for real life, accessible jobs and training routes, and communities that care about the environment. They also spoke of stronger relationships with the police and local services, help for those experiencing poverty, visible role models, and a say in the decisions shaping their future.
