Building Connections in Germany: Our Visit to CVJM Erlangen

Building Connections in Germany: Our Visit to CVJM Erlangen

Written by Rachel Boulton, YMCA North Staffordshire – Personal Development Coach

At YMCA North Staffordshire, we believe that some of the greatest learning experiences happen beyond the classroom. Recently, two members of staff and four of our Youth Ambassadors had the incredible opportunity to travel to Erlangen, Germany, as part of a YMCA exchange programme with CVJM Erlangen.

The exchange offered much more than sightseeing. It was a chance to experience a different culture, learn from another YMCA, develop new skills and build friendships that will last a lifetime.

After arriving in Erlangen, we settled into our accommodation before joining our hosts for a welcoming pizza evening. It was the perfect way to get to know everyone, share stories and begin forming connections that would grow throughout the week.

From the very beginning, the hospitality shown by everyone at CVJM Erlangen made us feel right at home.

Exploring the Great Outdoors

One of the highlights of the trip was a scenic 15–20-mile bike ride through the beautiful forests surrounding Erlangen. Along the way, we were fortunate enough to spot endangered wild horses grazing peacefully in their natural habitat – an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Following the ride, Wolfgang, one of our wonderful hosts, prepared a delicious evening meal before we headed to a traditional German beer festival. The lively atmosphere gave us a real insight into German culture and community life, creating memories that we’ll treasure for years to come.

Discovering Erlangen

The following day, we explored the city on a guided tour, learning about Erlangen’s fascinating history and heritage. From impressive churches and beautiful gardens to historic buildings and local landmarks, the tour helped us gain a deeper understanding of the city’s culture and traditions.

Adventure on the Water

Our third day brought another exciting activity as Frank, the leader of YMCA Erlangen, organised a paddleboarding session. It was a fantastic opportunity to try something new, enjoy the outdoors and spend more quality time together.

That evening, Wolfgang once again treated everyone to a fantastic meal, hosting a relaxed pasta party where conversations, laughter and new friendships continued long into the evening.

More Than Just a Trip

The YMCA Erlangen Exchange was about far more than visiting another country. It was an opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate different cultures and strengthen the relationship between YMCA North Staffordshire and CVJM Erlangen.

For both our staff and Youth Ambassadors, the experience built confidence, broadened perspectives and created friendships that stretch far beyond national borders. It reminded us that although we may come from different countries, we share the same YMCA values and a common passion for supporting young people and strengthening communities.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at CVJM Erlangen for their incredible hospitality and generosity throughout our visit. We look forward to welcoming them to Stoke-on-Trent in the future and continuing to build this fantastic international partnership.

Because that’s what the YMCA is all about – bringing people together, learning from one another and creating opportunities that can change lives.
